AI Training Jobs 2026: Legit Sites, Pay & Who Can Join

Laptop showing two AI chatbot answers, A and B, with rating buttons, an example of remote AI training work

AI training jobs, also called data annotation or AI rating work, are real, paid, remote contract jobs. You rate and compare AI answers, fix mistakes, or write questions that trip the model up. The legit platforms (DataAnnotation, Outlier, Mercor, Alignerr, Appen's CrowdGen, TELUS Digital's AI Community and Prolific) never ask you to pay to join.

Last reviewed: October 10, 2026. Platform rules, country lists and pay change often. Check each official page before you apply.

Key facts (checked October 10, 2026):

  • Where you live matters a lot. Outlier's published country list includes the Philippines, India, Mexico and El Salvador, but not Nigeria, Kenya or Pakistan.
  • Prolific is not open to residents of the Philippines or Nigeria.
  • Pay runs from about $16 an hour on some generalist projects (reported by Business Insider) to $100+ an hour for credentialed experts.
  • The work is project-based, so it can stop with little warning.

If you work in a call center, you've probably heard that AI is coming for tier-1 support. Here's the twist: the companies building that AI are paying people to teach it. Someone has to tell the model which answer is better, which fact is wrong, and why.

The real questions aren't "is this a thing?" They are: can you get in from where you live? What does it actually pay? And how do you avoid the fake versions that are now everywhere? That's what this guide covers. Every platform fact below comes from the platform's own pages, checked on October 10, 2026, unless it says otherwise.

What are AI training jobs?

Definition: AI training (data annotation) is human work that labels data or judges AI outputs so models can be improved.

Most of this work fits into a few task types. These come straight from the platforms' own descriptions:

  • Rating and ranking AI answers. You compare two chatbot responses and say which is better and why (Outlier, DataAnnotation).
  • Writing hard prompts and correct answers. You write a question in your field that the AI gets wrong, then write the right answer (Outlier).
  • Building grading rubrics and fact-checking. You define what a "good" answer looks like and flag errors (Outlier, DataAnnotation).
  • Search and ads evaluation. You judge whether search results match what the person searching wanted (TELUS Digital AI Community).
  • Research studies. Surveys, decision games and AI-evaluation studies run by academics and companies (Prolific).

In nearly every case you're an independent contractor, not an employee. Outlier says this directly in its FAQ. That means no fixed salary, no minimum hours, and you handle your own taxes. It also means nobody owes you a steady stream of work.

Which countries can join AI training platforms?

This is where most guides go vague, and where most readers outside the US get stuck. Here's what the official lists said on October 10, 2026:

Country Outlier (work-location list) Mercor (payment-country list) Prolific (participant list)
Philippines Listed Supported Not listed (waitlist)
India Listed Supported Listed
Nigeria Not listed Supported Not listed
Kenya Not listed Not supported Not listed

Egypt Listed Supported Listed
South Africa Listed Supported Listed
Mexico Listed Supported Listed
El Salvador Listed Supported Not listed
Guatemala Listed Supported Not listed
Honduras Listed Not supported Not listed
Colombia Listed Supported Not listed
Brazil Listed Supported (paid via Wise) Listed

How to read this table:

  • Outlier publishes the countries you may work from in its Flexible Working Guidelines (effective July 15, 2026). It also warns that some projects add their own location limits, and that using a VPN to hide your location is not allowed.
  • Mercor says it "cannot onboard experts or issue contracts" in any location missing from its supported countries page.
  • Prolific bases eligibility on where you live now, not your nationality. People in unsupported countries can join a waitlist (Prolific help centre).
  • DataAnnotation says it is "available in 50+ countries" on its About page, but we could not find a public country list. Treat your country as unconfirmed until the sign-up flow accepts you.
  • Alignerr gives each country one payment provider (Stripe or PayPal). We found no public country list.
  • Handshake AI is US-only. Its site says you must be based in the US with valid work authorization.

Being on a list only means you're allowed to apply. It doesn't mean you'll be accepted or get steady work.

Which AI training platforms are legit? The platforms compared

Checked October 10, 2026. "Pay" means only what the platform publishes. Where a platform doesn't publish a rate, we say so.

Platform What you do Entry requirements (as stated) Pay (as published) How you get paid
DataAnnotation Rate chatbot answers, compare outputs, fact-check, write, code review Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience for general work; fluent English; one-time Starter Assessment General projects "starting at $25–$50+/hr"; multilingual from $20+/hr; coding $40–$150+/hr PayPal, delivered "within a few days" after you request it
Outlier (operated by Scale AI) Write hard prompts, build rubrics, rate and rank answers At least an associate degree; English; ID and phone from your country; resume; LinkedIn Not published. "Rates vary by expertise, project complexity, and location," and you see the rate before starting Weekly on Tuesdays via PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer
Mercor Expert evaluation and benchmark work (doctors, lawyers, engineers, analysts) Role-specific expertise Homepage claims a "$109/hr average contracted rate"; individual roles listed at e.g. $61–$77/hr and $100–$150/hr Weekly (Wednesdays) via Stripe or Wise, depending on country. Contracts in USD, paid in local currency outside the US
Alignerr (powered by Labelbox) Language expert, data quality, search evaluation, document review, support task authoring Varies by role Homepage claims "$80/hr average pay"; sample listings $25–$30/hr (French) and $40–$120/hr Weekly cycle, paid by the following Friday via Stripe or PayPal (one provider per country)
CrowdGen by Appen Project-based annotation, evaluation, linguistics and domain work Project qualification process "Pay rate is based on location and skills"; top listings "up to" $90–$400/hr for specialists Bank transfer, PayPal, Payoneer, Airtm and more, depending on location
TELUS Digital AI Community Search and ads assessment, internet safety evaluation, online data analysis Per-country postings, e.g. the Philippines role requires 5 years living in the Philippines, an English assessment, an open-book exam and ID verification Not stated in the postings we reviewed Not stated in the pages we reviewed
Prolific Paid research studies, including AI evaluation 18+, verified account, supported country (waitlist) No hourly rate published PayPal. Minimum cash-out $6/£6; instant after your first 4 cashouts

Remotasks is a special case. Its own migration notice says generative-AI tasks moved to Outlier. In 2024, Rest of World reported it had shut down entirely in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan and stopped new sign-ups in Thailand, Vietnam and Poland. If someone pitches you "Remotasks" today, check the official site and expect to be sent to Outlier.

How much do AI training jobs really pay?

Chart comparing published AI training pay ranges with a reported $16 per hour generalist rate

The headline rates are real, but they mostly belong to experts. DataAnnotation's $40–$125+ tiers need a master's or PhD, a bachelor's plus 10+ years of experience, or professional credentials in law, finance or medicine. Its general track starts lower. Its own FAQ isn't consistent here: one answer says general projects start at "$25–$50+," another says "$25–$30+."

Independent reporting gives a less flattering picture:

  • Business Insider (November 12, 2025) reported that Mercor ended a large Meta project, codenamed Musen, and offered contractors a similar new project at $16 an hour, $5 less than before. Mercor told BI the information was "inaccurate" but did not say which details it disputed. In the same article, BI reported that Mercor's CEO had put the company's average rate at $95 an hour and said rivals paid around $30.
  • Outlier says rates depend partly on location. A rate someone in the US mentions online may not be the rate you're offered.

Demand is growing, but that doesn't guarantee you get work. Upwork's In-Demand Skills 2026 report found AI data annotation and labeling grew 154% (freelancer earnings in 2025 vs 2024, for work hired from the US). Growing demand and steady hours for any one person are different things.

A safe planning rule: budget using the lowest rate you've actually been offered, and assume hours can drop to zero in any given week.

Can AI training work stop suddenly?

Yes. AI training is project work, and projects end. Three documented examples:

  • Whole countries cut off. In March 2024, Rest of World reported that workers in Kenya were cut off from Remotasks with no warning they received. The company blamed "operational errors" for the missing notice.
  • Projects replaced at lower pay. See the Business Insider report above. The same article reported that Scale AI cut a team of "generalist" contractors and that xAI cut more than 500 data labellers.
  • Performance gates. DataAnnotation's FAQ says work depends on demand for your skills and your past performance, and that "subpar or problematic contributions may result in loss of access."

That's not a reason to avoid this work. It's a reason to treat it as extra income while you build something steadier, not as a reason to quit your job next week.

Why do customer service workers have a head start?

I won't promise anyone gets accepted. But look at what this work actually asks for, and compare it with what you do every day:

  • Following detailed guidelines exactly. That's QA scorecards and call scripts.
  • Explaining why an answer is good or bad. That's how you write escalation notes.
  • Judging tone, clarity and helpfulness. That's literally what a support quality analyst does.
  • A second language. DataAnnotation lists language specialist roles (Spanish, Tagalog, Hindi, Bengali, Portuguese, Arabic and more) at $25–$40/hr.

One listing on Alignerr's homepage on the day we checked made the connection directly: a "Customer Support Task Author (AI Training)" role for experienced support professionals in Bangalore. If you want to see how your support experience maps to other paid remote work, read Is Your Customer Service Experience Worth Money Online? and Your English Is Worth Money Online.

The honest limit: degree rules are real. Outlier requires at least an associate degree. DataAnnotation asks for a bachelor's or equivalent experience, so if you don't have a degree, it and the language tracks are more realistic first stops.

A hypothetical example

This is an illustration, not a real person or result. Ana is a bilingual Spanish-English chat agent in San Salvador with an associate degree. Checking the official lists, she'd find:

  • El Salvador is on Outlier's work-location list.
  • El Salvador is a supported Mercor payment country.
  • El Salvador is not on Prolific's list, so she can only join the waitlist.

Her best first moves would be Outlier (she meets the degree minimum) and a DataAnnotation language or general assessment. For Mercor, she'd look only at roles that match her experience. None of this guarantees acceptance. It just stops her from wasting a week on platforms she can't legally use.

How do you apply for AI training jobs without wasting your one shot?

  1. Check your country first on the official list (table above). Don't use a VPN to get around location rules. Outlier and DataAnnotation both treat VPN use as a problem during verification.
  2. Get your documents ready. Outlier asks for a valid ID and a phone number from your country of residence, a current resume, and a LinkedIn profile.
  3. Take the assessment seriously. DataAnnotation says its Starter Assessment takes about an hour and can only be taken once. Thorough answers beat fast ones.
  4. Set up payouts in your own name. Mercor requires a bank account in your own legal name, and family members' accounts fail its checks. Outlier pays via PayPal, Airtm or ACH. DataAnnotation pays via PayPal. If you're choosing a payout account, read Get Paid in USD Outside the US and PayPal vs Wise vs Payoneer.
  5. Apply to three or four platforms, not one. Work comes and goes on each of them.
  6. Track your hours and earnings. You're a contractor, so taxes in your country are your responsibility.

How can you spot fake AI training jobs?

Scammers copy whatever is popular, and this work is popular right now. Watch for:

Checklist of warning signs of fake AI training job offers, such as unexpected WhatsApp messages and deposit requests
  • Unexpected texts or WhatsApp messages offering an "online assessor" or "remote position." The US Federal Trade Commission warned on April 30, 2026 that fake recruiters claim to be from real companies, mention daily or weekly pay without any job details, and ask you to reply "YES." The FTC's advice: "Real employers will never contact you that way."
  • Small payouts first, then a deposit. In FTC-described task scams, victims are often paid $5 to $20 at first to build trust, then told to deposit their own money, usually crypto, to "unlock" earnings. That money is gone.
  • Any fee at all. DataAnnotation: "We will never ask for money from you for anything." CrowdGen: "We will never ask you to pay anything to join our projects." TELUS Digital's Philippines posting says it "will never request a monetary deposit" and that recruiters email only from @telusinternational.com or @telusinternational.ai addresses.
  • Onboarding run entirely on Telegram or WhatsApp, with no account on the platform's official website.

The scale is serious. The FTC says reported job-scam losses rose from $90 million in 2020 to $501 million in 2024 (US reports only). The safe habit: you apply first, on the official domain, and you never pay. For more on spotting fakes, see Where Legit Remote Jobs Are Posted (And How to Spot Scams). RemoteShift's free Remote Job Starter Kit also includes a scam red-flag checklist.

Are AI training jobs worth it?

For many English-fluent people outside the US, yes, as a flexible side income and a line on your resume that shows you've worked in AI. It's a poor fit if you need guaranteed hours, if your country isn't on the lists, or if you're hoping the expert rates apply to generalist work.

If you're unsure whether AI training or a steadier remote role fits you better, that's what the RemoteShift assessment is for.

Yes, the major platforms are real and pay contractors. DataAnnotation says it has paid over $20 million since 2020. Outlier says it's operated by Scale AI. CrowdGen is Appen's platform, and Appen is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. Fake "AI training" offers also exist, so apply only through official websites and never pay a fee.

Can I do AI training jobs from Nigeria or the Philippines?

It depends on the platform. On October 10, 2026, the Philippines was on Outlier's work-location list and Nigeria was not. Mercor listed both as supported payment countries. Prolific listed neither. Lists change, so check the official page on the day you apply.

Can I do Handshake AI from outside the US?

No. Handshake AI's site says you must be based in the US with valid US work authorization.

Does DataAnnotation pay outside the US?

It pays via PayPal and says it's available in 50+ countries, but it doesn't publish a country list. Treat your country as unconfirmed until the sign-up flow accepts you.

Do I need a degree for AI training jobs?

Often, yes. Outlier requires at least an associate degree. DataAnnotation asks for a bachelor's degree or equivalent real-world experience for general work, and advanced credentials for its higher-paid tiers.

How much do AI training jobs pay?

Published ranges start around $20–$25 an hour for language and general work on DataAnnotation and go above $100 an hour for credentialed experts. Business Insider reported a Mercor project paying $16 an hour in November 2025. Outlier doesn't publish rates and says they vary by location.

How do AI training platforms pay workers outside the US?

Through PayPal (DataAnnotation, Outlier, Prolific), Airtm (Outlier, CrowdGen), Payoneer (CrowdGen), or Stripe and Wise bank payouts (Mercor). The method available depends on your country.

Is Remotasks still working?

Remotasks' own migration notice says generative-AI work moved to Outlier, and Rest of World reported country shutdowns in 2024. Check the official site before trusting anyone who recruits for "Remotasks."
